Student Life

High school is so much more than a classroom.

Laughter. Friendships. Hobbies. Leadership. Fun. Service. Talent. Food.

Yes, food. Burger Club, Spanish Club, and Asia Club are just a few groups who incorporate delicious treats into their gatherings that are also rich with camaraderie. For many of our students, it is here, outside the classroom, where their favorite memories and strongest transformations occur.

Visit our Clubs and Activities webpage to glimpse the array of extra curricular options for students to enjoy. View the student-created videos below to see where De Smet Jesuit and our students really come to life.

Highlights

Brotherhood

Freshman/Senior Mentor Program: Each freshman homeroom partners with selected seniors called Compañeros who guide them through first year.

School Spirit: Present at games and pep rallies, the Sports and Spirit club leads cheers and fires up the crowd.

Homeroom: Each day begins with 10 minutes of consistency and companionship with the same teacher and classmates during all four years of high school.

House System: Bonding with peers from all four grades, students join as one of six houses in pep rallies and spirit competitions.

Class Retreats: Each class attends specific retreats for time to bond away from the regular school day.

Freshman Orientation and Odyssey Retreat: Each August freshmen arrive on campus for two days dedicated just to them to meet each other, enjoy fun activities, and acclimate to the school together.

Sophomore Team Building and Service Ascent Retreats: From landscaping and serving food pantries to zip lining and building towers, sophomores unite as a class.

3-Day Kairos Retreats for Juniors and Seniors: A favorite for many students, these extended overnight retreats off campus bring small groups together and allow time for faith formation and deep reflection.

Student spaces in lobby, Innovation Center, and room 210: Open to all, these spaces welcome hangout sessions, study groups, gamers, and students who just need a place to land.

Leadership

President's Ambassadors: Chosen for their reliability, friendliness, mission-centered mindset, and leadership skills, these students represent the school at major events and High School Nights.

Student Government: All grades elect student leaders at the class level. School-wide STUGO comprises upperclassmen who meet in a special homeroom and plan rallies, spirit weeks, and dances to pump up school spirit.

Compañeros: Selected seniors spend an entire semester serving as a mentor to one homeroom of freshmen.

Campus Ministry: Students with a keen interest in sharing the Gospel meet in a specific homeroom, serve at Mass, assist with class retreats, and participate in peer ministry.

Team Captains: Athletes chosen by teammates and coaches lead their teams and set the example for Spartan sportsmanship.

Club Leadership: Varying by the club, leadership opportunities range from editor to president.

Events

Spartanfest Homecoming: This annual spirit week each fall is loaded with fun contests, competitions, a pep rally to honor fall athletes, home soccer and football games, and a Homecoming dance.

Christmas on Campus: With hallways transformed into a wonderland, De Smet Jesuit hosts young children from the city to meet Santa, make crafts, and open gifts.

Mission Week: One week each spring, students enjoy games, dress down for spirit themes, and collect for missions to raise awareness for others.

Culture Fest: Celebrating cultures from around the world, students and faculty showcase countries and traditions of their heritage and passion.

Junior Ring Mass and Dance: Juniors receive their class rings at a special Mass that marks their transition to lead the school with their God-given talents. A dance for juniors and their dates follows in the evening.

Senior Prom: The formal dance for seniors wraps up the end of their year.
