On December 14, 2021, De Smet Jesuit Board Chair Gene Morgenthaler '77 announced the appointment of Fr. Ronny O’Dwyer, S.J., as interim president, effective January 1, 2022.
Fr. Tom Greene, S.J., Provincial of the USA Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus, missioned Fr. O’Dwyer as Interim President of De Smet Jesuit following a unanimous vote of approval from the Board of Trustees. This will be a 12-18-month assignment for Fr. O’Dwyer, during which he will work with faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni to ensure that our school community is well positioned to hire De Smet’s next president.
Fr. O’Dwyer is a familiar face and a respected member of our extended community. During his Jesuit formation, Fr. O’Dwyer served at De Smet as a theology teacher and an assistant for student activities from 2009-2012. He presently serves as the Assistant to the Dean for Catholic School Initiatives and an assistant professor in Saint Louis University’s School of Education. Prior to this work, Fr. O'Dwyer was the director of the Billiken Teacher Corps from 2016-2020. Since his ordination as a Jesuit priest in 2015, Fr. O’Dwyer has been invited by many Spartan alumni to share in significant moments in their lives, including baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
Fr. O’Dwyer will complete a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy from Vanderbilt University in May 2022. He holds four graduate degrees: an M.A. in Catholic Educational Leadership and an M.A. in Philosophy from Saint Louis University; and a Master’s in Divinity and an ecclesial degree from Boston College. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America, and he is a graduate of Regis Jesuit High School in Denver. In addition, he has extensive board experience at Creighton University, Rockhurst High School, Loyola Academy of St. Louis, and Boys Hope Girls Hope.
"We are honored to have Fr. O'Dwyer as our leader as we move forward in our mission-driven work with confidence and great hope for the future," Mr. Morgenthaler said.
Welcome back to Spartan Country, Fr. O'Dwyer!
