2019 - 2020 Season in Review

The “Mission Back to Tradition” continued in the 2019-20 season picking up where the 2018-19 season left off after setting a school record for the largest turnaround. The Spartans added more accomplishments this season by finishing with an overall record of 22-7, earning 2nd place in the MCC for the 2nd straight year and going undefeated at the Palace on Ballas. The 22 wins helped guide the program to  back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in 18 years. The Spartans won the Circle 7 Championship for the 2nd straight year. The 6-2 MCC record was the best conference record in 9 years as the Spartans beat all 4 teams at least once in league play. The Spartans also finished 2nd in the Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament for the 2nd straight year. Senior Michael Skoff finished off his 4-year varsity career by compiling over 600 points, 300 rebounds, 100 assists and 100 steals.

This year, the Spartans put together one of the most competitive schedules in school history, playing 10 games vs. top 10 ranked St. Louis Metro areas schools while competing in a National Event at the Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL where De Smet matched up against 7’1 McDonald’s All-American and University of North Carolina signee, Walker Kessler and 6’11 4-star, University of Arkansas signee Julian Williams. In total, De Smet played vs. 19 college basketball signees.

The Spartans relied heavily on strong defense and rebounding along with a balanced scoring attack for their success. Defensively, De Smet held their opponents to just 50.3ppg and won the rebound battle in 26 of their 29 games. Yaya Keita led the way on rebounds at 9.4 per game. Offensively, the Spartans outscored their opponents by 10 points per game and had 7 players averaging between 7ppg and 11ppg while having 7 different game-high scorers with 8 players shooting 40% of higher from 3 point range.
