De Smet Jesuit students participate in all aspects of theatrical production.

From acting on the stage and directing shows to constructing scenery and designing sound and lights, students take the lead in building and presenting high quality productions.

Theater definitely makes me feel like I belong...(it) is the most accepting and open group at De Smet. It doesn't matter who you are, we love to have anyone. The upperclassmen help guide and befriend the lowerclassmen as if we were brothers.

Frequently Asked Questions

I notice you have girls in your theatre productions. Where do they come from?

Our girls come from many public and private schools across the St. Louis area.

If I play a sport, does that mean I can't be involved in a play?

Not at all. We've set up the production schedule so that we have a production in each of the three sports seasons. So, if you play basketball, you could be involved in the Fall Play or the One Acts. If you play soccer, you could be involved in the Musical or One Acts. If you play baseball, you could do the Fall Play or Musical.

Do you need to have theatre experience to become involved in the theatre program?

No experience necessary—everyone is welcome!

Acting students will focus solely upon the study of acting and will perform three or four scenes and monologues, continue reading plays, and explore theater history. Directing students will perform two scenes, and, with a focus upon directing, direct the Acting students in two scenes and monologues (and be eligible to direct the student one-act plays in the spring).
