MUSIC

De Smet Jesuit offers dynamic music programs open to all students, from beginners to experienced performers. Band students can join ensembles like Concert Band, Jazz Lab, or the audition-based Honors Jazz Combo. Chorus welcomes all voices, with opportunities to advance into Advanced Chorus or the auditioned Black Robe ensemble. Both programs perform at school liturgies, concerts, and community events, helping students grow in skill, confidence, and creativity.

Theatre

At De Smet Jesuit, students dive into every aspect of theatre—from acting and directing to set design, lighting, sound, and stagecraft. With a full-season lineup that includes a fall play, spring musical, and student-directed one-act plays, our program welcomes all experience levels and schedules productions around athletic commitments. Participants gain confidence, leadership, and creative collaboration while engaging peers across grades and schools.

Visual Arts

Our Visual Arts program invites students to explore and express their creativity through drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital design. Beginning with an introductory studio course in freshman year, students can progress through advanced levels—Studio Art 1 to 4—and take electives like Sculpture and Digital Graphic Design. Whether through hands-on projects, critical analysis, or portfolio development, students refine their skills while deepening their artistic and visual literacy.

Media

De Smet Jesuit’s Digital Media program gives students hands-on experience in photography, video production, editing, graphic design, and journalism. Students can contribute to our student-run publication, The Mirror, or help produce live broadcasts through the De Smet Student Network (DSN). Whether telling stories through articles or capturing moments behind the camera, students build real-world skills in creative communication.

High school might be about doing one thing particularly well because you're a gifted football player or a really good guitar player or a great artist or a great writer. But for most guys it's about trying all the things that you can try just to see what's a good fit.

Where creativity meets mission

At De Smet Jesuit, the arts are more than extracurricular—they are a reflection of our mission to care for and form the whole person. Through music, theatre, visual arts, and digital media, students are invited to explore their gifts, express their identity, and engage their imagination. Rooted in the Jesuit value of cura personalis, our arts programs help young men grow in confidence, empathy, and purpose—preparing them to lead lives of creativity, faith, and service.
