De Smet Jesuit Football

M.A.A.D. (Mindset, Accountability, Action, Discipline) Men is an acronym for the specific traits that Coach Steeples will focus on developing in each player. Growth under the MAAD Men system will squeeze every ounce of ability out of the individual and boost the team’s culture. Every decision that you make will affect this Family. In everything that we do and every decision that we make, we must operate with a TEAM 1st mindset. Block out any negative outside noise that does not benefit the team. We control what we allow in our head. If you are not for us, you are against us. We are a FAMILY. Respect every woman and man you interact with. Our discipline and actions will directly dictate our environment. We must create an environment of success by what we do on and off the field. If you see something not being done right, hold one another accountable and FIX IT or it will become who we are (our culture). Sacrifice for what you want, or what you want will become the sacrifice. Encourage your teammates! Encourage one another to play with a desire to excel and no fear of failure. Encourage teammates to display positive MAAD Men characteristics. And celebrate it when they do! Your coaches will be held to this same standard. We are not entitled, we are not afraid of hard work, we earn everything we get, and work with an intentionality that develops REAL confidence. Individuals that can effectively uphold the MAAD Men standard on a consistent basis while holding others accountable will become the best version of themselves and the high character young man that this football program develops on and off the field. When we all buy in to the MAAD Men characteristics, we become a family that consistently performs to our standard. #MAADmen

M - MINDSET = Our Mindset is our biggest asset. We know we can perform the task at hand because we have developed the mental toughness to focus one play at a time. Focus is being locked into the necessary keys/details and emotionally in-tune to the point where we allow ourselves to perform the task at hand to the fullest of our abilities. We block out the noise and choose positive self-talk. “What you are thinking, you are becoming.”

(Be mentally tough enough to focus on the task at hand regardless of circumstance. - utilize mental conditioning)

A - ACCOUNTABILTY = Those who are accountable display honest actions towards and with others that reflect the integrity our standard. We understand our standard/job and perform to it at the fullest of our abilities. We make things of personal “value” (Time/Body/Selfish desires) subordinate to something more important; the Team (Family).

(Know our standard and apply your full self to it in everything that you do. Influence teammates to do the same)

AACTION = We give max effort! We are Men of Action! No need for talk. We put action behind our aspirations (work for what you want). On the field we embrace the physicality of our action! We understand Football is a disciplined team competition through violent physical opposition!

(Put Action behind your aspirations and work for what you want. Earned, not given!) (Proverbs 14:23)

DDISCIPLINE = We consistently execute our job with a relentless “Enemy Unknown” approach (it must get done regardless of what/who attempts to stop me from doing it because that’s what the Team needs). We are disciplined enough to intentionally develop positive habits that we are confident in. We become dominant by becoming familiar with dominating the day (dominating every given opportunity).

(Be intentional with your preparation & consistent in your execution. Dominate the Down/Day #3D)

Men – A man is merely an adult. And an adult is an individual that is ready to lead. Build meaningful relationships so that you can become a better leader, as we work towards a common goal. (A leader is a not a level or power, but instead a level of influence). (Build meaningful relationships that allow you to lead effectively)

I am emotionally invested in De Smet and excited about the opportunity to have an impact on young men’s lives here! De Smet’s vision allows me the privilege to serve as a catalyst in young men’s spiritual awakening and overall growth while preparing them academically and socially so that they become “Men For and With Others”. I coach the man first and the player second, so that we get all that this game and team dynamic have to offer. WE create a culture that builds a committed brotherhood (#TheFAMILY) , develops work ethic (#WorkingBoots), & requires selflessness through the constant challenges of pursuing competitive excellence. We work when it's time to work and play when it's time to play. We play football not solely because we're good at it but because it is FUN! MAAD Men is the standard; which is an acronym for the Mindset, Accountability, Action, & Discipline that we expect our young men to exercise.
