Mission Statement

The purpose of the De Smet Jesuit Rugby program is to introduce the second most played game in the world, rugby, to as many students as possible. To this end, it is the goal of the program to teach basic skills and fundamentals of the game, maintain a policy of no cuts, promote universal participation, utilize positive reinforcement, foster pride in individual accomplishment, develop and maintain an all inclusive team spirit, encourage parental involvement and; bottom line, HAVE FUN.

About DeSmet Rugby

Rugby is a sport to be enjoyed, where we can learn much about ourselves and others and develop qualities such as cooperation, teamwork, dedication and determination to succeed.

Along with many other Catholic and Jesuit high schools around the country, DeSmet has a long tradition of success with the sport of rugby. DeSmet’s 20 year history of rugby in St. Louis, has seen multiple state championships, national rankings, and dozens of players who have gone on to play college rugby and beyond.

One of the earliest high school rugby programs to be started in St. Louis, De Smet has traditionally been one of the premier teams in Missouri. We currently participate in the Missouri Youth Rugby, State Rugby Organization with teams from St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, Kansas City and Springfield.

The tradition of rugby continues at De Smet in 2020! Our season runs from March to early May, with practices starting in February. We are always looking for athletes who are interested in learning this great sport!
