Cow Skull Watercolor
Kyle Matthes

This watercolor piece depicts a lonely cow skull. I utilized a warm color scheme to represent the arid, hot climate of a desert. I started by first drawing the skull in pencil and then located the brightest highlights on the skull. Once I picked these out, I made sure to leave them white and then added a yellow wash to the entire piece. From here I gradually added darker warm colors on top of one another to simulate shadows. To create the darkest shadow and top-most layer I decided to use a blue that sharply contrasted with my color scheme. By doing this I drew attention to certain areas such as the eye socket. Along with this, the contrast offered visual interest.
