COMMITTED TO SAFETY

At De Smet Jesuit, the well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is paramount. We enforce strict background checks, visitor logging, and all adults—including coaches and moderators—must complete the Archdiocese‑approved Protecting God’s Children program. Following broader Jesuit and diocesan standards, our policies prohibit discrimination, abuse, bullying, and hazing, and provide clear channels for confidential reporting and prompt action.

De Smet Jesuit is deeply committed to ensuring the safety, security and well-being of its students, faculty and staff, as well as alumni, parents and guests who participate in on campus events and activities. The school does not tolerate discrimination, sexual abuse, sexual activity, hazing or bullying, whether perpetrated by adults or students.

Providing the safest environment for students to learn and thrive is a top priority. De Smet Jesuit conducts regular background checks on employees and maintains records of visitors who come to campus during the school day.

All employees and non-employed coaches and moderators are required to complete Protecting God’s Children, an education program sponsored by the Archdiocese of St. Louis focused on providing a safe and secure environment.

If you or someone you know has experienced abuse by a Jesuit, you are urged to report the incident to the law enforcement agency in the location where it happened. If the victim is a minor, you should also contact the local child protection agency.

The provincial has designated Mr. Jim Appelbaum to receive reports of sexual abuse on behalf of the province; he can be reached confidentially at (314) 915-7168 or by email at UCSSafeMinistry@Jesuits.org.
