Welcome to Spartan Summer at De Smet Jesuit!

Spartan Summer at De Smet Jesuit provides exciting academic and athletic enrichment opportunities that inspire and empower young men for and with others to transform the world for the greater glory of God.

This summer, we are excited to offer 16 outstanding athletic camps and 11 hands-on academic classes. Our coaches will challenge you to take your athletic skills to new levels and our teachers will exercise your brain in ways you didn’t know possible, all on our sprawling campus in Creve Coeur.

All sports camps and classes are offered in one-week sessions for boys entering the grades indicated; feel free to mix, match, and enjoy the options and flexibility provided to make this your most fun and productive summer yet.

Academic Camps

Arts in Action!

Instructor: Emily Ledbetter, De Smet Jesuit Art Teacher

Description: Join us for a week of Arts in Action! Do you like to draw, paint and create? Do you like to get your hands dirty and help others? Then this is the summer camp for you! This year’s theme will focus on creating art for the community. Campers will explore a variety of artistic mediums while sharing their talents and creativity with others. Each art project in this week long camp will benefit or be showcased in a local charity or non-profit organization. Campers will also participate in a supply drive that will benefit youth in need of art supplies in the St. Louis area. Bring your creativity caps and help bring art to our community!

Mad Science I

Instructor: Jim Walsh, De Smet Jesuit Chemistry Teacher

Description: If you are a bit of a mad scientist, this is the course for you! Spend a week exploring the wonders and magic of laboratory chemistry getting your hands dirty and performing real experiments! Chemistry is all around us and it’s exciting to see – especially when it involves color changes, lighting things on fire, and (small) explosions. Learn to conduct experiments safely, use lab equipment, different experimental procedures, and gain an understanding of chemical concepts. We’ll talk fireworks, formulas, and investigations!

Robotics I – LEGO Robotics

Description: This hands-on intro to engineering camp offers students the opportunity to build, program, and compete with robots made from the LEGO™ Mindstorms EV3 kit. Students will compete in several design challenges, build and program the robots to complete these challenges, and race their robots against other teams.

Junkyard Journey

Instructor: Laurie Kohler, De Smet Jesuit Art Instructor

Description: These junk yard dogs will scavenge for scrap materials to create interesting, one-of-a-kind, 3-dimensional sculptures in a fun and safe environment. The bulk of this week long camp will focus on repurposing found objects made of wood, metal, plastic, and fibers. The course is designed to take one’s imagination and exploration of materials to the limit. Come and see what you can make!

CSI – De Smet Jesuit

Instructor: Dr. Mariette Baxendale, De Smet Jesuit Science Department Chair

Description: Campers will serve as forensic investigators by utilizing observation and critical thinking skills during the examination of a crime scene. What does the evidence tell you? Students will use real-world forensic techniques and analyses as they explore crime scene investigation, impression evidence, hair, fibers, and DNA. Space is limited – sign up quickly!

Intermediate Robotics – TETRIX ™ Robotics

Description: This hands-on engineering camp offers an opportunity to design, program, and build robots using the TETRIX Pro ™ platform. Students will compete in several intermediate design challenges, building and programming robots to complete challenges beyond those presented in the Beginning Robotics camp.

Description: Practice study skills with a dose of social conscience and sports! Join Spartan history teacher and cross country coach, Bryan Traughber, as he makes reading, taking quizzes, writing short essays, and learning technology based projects fun and thought-provoking through the study of the environment (June 12-16) and local sports teams, one team each day (July 17-21). Mad Science 2

Instructor: Jim Walsh, De Smet Jesuit Chemistry Teacher

Description: For the slightly experienced chemist, if you will (especially those who sign up for Spartan Summer Mad Science I, though not a prerequisite), this class will further your knowledge of science and chemistry in a hands-on class designed for students with a bit of lab experience. Taking place entirely in a lab environment, we explore the wonder and excitement of chemical reactions, compare exothermic and endothermic reactions, and identify unknowns. We’ll investigate reactions which produce gas, form a precipitate, and cause color change. Experimental topics also include the use of chemical indicators in determining pH levels and examining the mathematical relationships of a reaction.

Digital Media

Instructor: John Hawkey, De Smet Jesuit Theology Teacher

Description: Students will be introduced to the basics of Digital Media in the 21st century. Digital media includes video production, live event broadcasting, and social media. Students will focus on production, editing, and filming, as well as broadcasting in different genres. Students will also learn how to use social media to promote their messages. The collaborative nature of this class will serve as the basis for a “production team.” Also fundamental to this course are the philosophical and leadership skills necessary to be successful in the digital age.

Being Sherlock Holmes

Instructor: Nick Dressler, De Smet Jesuit English Teacher

Description: Sherlock Holmes’s idiosyncratic methods have made him the most popular and enduring literary detective of all time, and this summer his secrets are revealed at Spartan Summer at De Smet Jesuit! Join us to learn the unique practices of the master sleuth himself, such as deductive logic, observation, code breaking, forensic science, and interrogation, all while you explore Victorian England and enhance your writing skills with the latest in computer technology. Hurry! The game is afoot!

Experience Escape Rooms – Think Outside the Box, The McGyver Process

Instructor: Tony Strawhun, De Smet Jesuit Physics Teacher

Description: How would you pick up a tennis ball without getting closer than five feet away from it if you only had a coffee can and some string? Can you balance ten carpentry nails on the head of another? Can you get your team across the river without a boat or a bridge? In this hands-on camp, students are challenged to think creatively and critically to overcome challenges. A combination of a low ropes course, teambuilding, and creativity, this camp offers students an opportunity to improvise solutions to challenging problems and innovate creative alternatives, concluding with an attempt to escape from De Smet Jesuit with follow campers.

Baseball

Description: Designed to improve campers’ baseball knowledge and skills. Participants will receive instruction on hitting, pitching, catching mechanics, base running and fielding. The camp is structured to help both the casual player and the advanced player. Participants will be grouped according to ability.

Baseball Arm Camp

Description: The varsity baseball staff at De Smet Jesuit invites coaches, players, fathers, and sons to this three-day arm care and conditioning clinic. We will be discussing the ins and outs of proper care and conditioning of a payer’s most important asset – his arm. Learn from one of the most well-known arm care specialists in the state of Missouri, Travis Griffin.

This clinic is for the student athlete, who will be the actively involved in clinic training. We highly recommend that father or coach attend as well to learn this valuable information. The price for attendance is for the student; there is no additional fee for parent or coach.

Basketball

Description: Blake Ahearn Basketball Camps focus on teaching the game of basketball to kids of all skill sets while creating an exciting atmosphere for everyone involved. Three goals we want to accomplish for all our campers are to learn something new, be competitive and have fun. This is a great opportunity to learn from great players and coaches while building relationships with new people you meet. There will be Under Armour prizes and give aways as well as

Basketball Shooting Camp

Description: Shooting camp will focus on teaching fundamentals of shooting to kids of all skill sets while creating an exciting atmosphere for everyone involved. Three goals we want to accomplish for all campers are to learn something new, be competitive, and have fun. Cross Country

Description: Students will develop their fitness levels and have fun while learning the basics of running through a variety of different activities. They will be introduced to stretching techniques, plyometrics, biomechanics, and conditioning. No prior running experience necessary.

Football - Full Day Camp

Description: Join former NFL player Robert Steeples, along with additional NFL and collegiate guests, for a week of expert introduction to important techniques and skills for the gridiron, including: offensive and defensive fundamentals for athletes of all levels, speed and agility circuit training, age-appropriate weight lifting introduction, proper tackling techniques that increase player safety, as well as next level knowledge and position specific skills that will give our campers an advantage going into the next season. This camp also includes seven-on-seven games throughout the week, culminating with the Spartan Bowl - the camp finale that re-creates the one of a kind De Smet Football Gameday atmosphere for our campers!

Football - 1/2 Day Camp

Description: Campers will receive an introduction to important techniques and skills for the gridiron, including:

§offensive and defensive stances

§how to properly throw, hold, and run with the football

§proper techniques for blocking, tackling, passing, receiving, placekicking and punting

Lacrosse

Instructor: Joseph Douglas, Spartan Varsity Lacrosse Coach

Fee: $80 (Beginner – stick necessary)

$130 (Intermediate – stick/helmet/gloves needed)

Description: Players will be introduced to the country’s fastest growing sport, its positions and fundamentals by Varsity Coach Joe Douglas, along with De Smet alumni currently playing NCAA lacrosse. If you would like to purchase a stick, you may do so from the camp staff for $50. Please purchase in advance as there are a limited number available.

Soccer

Instructor: Josh Klein, Spartan Varsity Soccer Coach

Dates: June 5-9

Time: 8:30am-11:30am

Description: Campers will learn shooting, heading, receiving, passing and ball control techniques. Tactical training will include one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-two situations. Instruction is designed to meet the needs of players from beginner to advanced, and participants are grouped according to skill. Any practice apparel is acceptable (as long as it is appropriate), plus soccer cleats and shin guards. We will meet rain or shine. This is a most worthwhile camp that involves dynamic individual training techniques (as mentioned above) as well as small group and team tactics, PLUS daily contests in which campers can win prizes!!! This camp also affords the youth athlete a chance to meet the entire

De Smet coaching staff as well as many of our varsity players. Your son will get to see how we run our program and come to understand what some of the expectations can be in a high school soccer program.

Ultimate Frisbee

Description: Ultimate Frisbee is a seven-on-seven field sport that combines elements of football, soccer, and basketball. Join nine-time consecutive state championship coaches to learn more about this burgeoning sport in high school athletics! This camp will introduce participants to the rules, basic strategies, and essential skills of the game. Campers will receive a De Smet Jesuit disc and a practice jersey.

Volleyball

Instructor: Tim Haffner, Spartan Varsity Volleyball Coach

Grades: 5-8

Fee: $75

Designed to meet the needs of players from beginner to advanced levels. Each day will focus on a different skill, starting with passing and moving into serving, hitting, and blocking. The camp will also involve a tournament to test and work on skills discussed each day. Wear comfortable attire, bring a drink for breaks.

Weight Lifting

Instructors: Colby Robinson, Spartan Varsity Wrestling Coach

Dates: May 30-June 2

Description: Campers will learn proper technique for ground-based lifts, individual body part exercises, proper techniques for spotting and general weight room safety, a working knowledge of which exercises develop which body parts, a basic understanding of the principles of resistance training, solid knowledge of proper stretching and warm-up exercises for lifting, and plyometric training for development of quick-twitch muscle fiber. Meet us in the weight room to build up and lift up!

Wrestling

Dates: July 10-14

Grades: 4-9

Fee: $95

Time: 8:30am-11:00am

Description: This camp is dedicated to the growth and development of grade school wrestlers. Campers will learn the basics of wrestling, including positioning, motion, and poise. This camp is highlighted by one-on-one coaches in the St. Louis area. Novice and skilled wrestlers are welcome, with appropriate learning tracks available for both.

Important Camp Notes

*Visit www.desmetjesuit.org/summercamps to register for all camps except basketball. For Blake Ahearn basketball camps, please register at: www.basketballonballas.com.

* Campers are encouraged to pair morning and afternoon camps, and will be provided a hot, healthy lunch. Supervision and activities will be provided for campers attending programs which end earlier than the start time of lunch/afternoon programs.

*Base price for academic camps is $150. Materials fees are reflected in stated fee for individual camps.

*Medical and media releases are required at time of registration.

*Payment in full required at time of registration.

*Refunds in full through May 1. After this time, we regret we are unable to issue refunds.

*Spartan Summer at De Smet Jesuit will cancel any camp that does not meet minimum enrollment requirements 14 days prior to the designated start date of camp. Registrants will be offered placement in other camps the same week or offered a complete refund.
