Mothers' Club

August 2016

A Note from the Mothers' Club President

Welcome to the start of the 2016-2017 school year! While it is hard to believe summer is behind us, there are so many things to look forward to this coming year. The start of a new school year is filled with endless possibilities and opportunities, not only for our sons, but for the moms as well.

Some of you have sons entering De Smet Jesuit for the first time. Welcome! We are so happy to have you in the De Smet Jesuit community. To the returning moms, welcome back! As you know, this year will bring another year of new experiences for both you and your son.

De Smet Jesuit Mothers' Club is first and foremost a social organization. We want to encourage involvement of all mothers of current students, thereby creating a sense of community in the school. This is achieved in many ways:

  • social activities
  • volunteer opportunities to support the De Smet Jesuit school community as well as the community at large.
  • opportunities for mothers and sons to participate in school-sponsored events together

Last year, we added class representatives to the Mothers' Club and it was a huge success! These are moms who graciously raised their hands and coordinated fun, informal ways to connect with other moms in your son(s) grade(s). These might be events such as mom-only happy hours, mother/son service projects, attending home football games/tailgates or getting together to see the school’s fall musical. As you all know, getting information from your sons is not easy, so these Mothers' Club events are a great way to stay informed, plus they are a lot of fun! Be on the lookout for an email from your Class Rep Mom.

De Smet Jesuit challenges our sons to “step out of their comfort zone” in order to broaden their social and spiritual horizons. In order to help set an example for our sons, my challenge to each of you is to pick a Mothers' Club or school event to participate in this fall.

Whether you are a new or a veteran mom to the school, we want you to feel connected to the DSJ community in a way that resonates with you. I am honored to have the privilege of serving as your De Smet Jesuit Mothers' Club President this school year. I look forward to seeing you at these and many more events throughout the year.

An Ignatian Mother’s Prayer
Loving God, our Heavenly Father,
I bring my son into Your Divine Presence this day.
Give him a heart that is loving and compassionate,
a mind that readily distinguishes good from evil and
the courage to give of his time and talents for others.
Help me to realize that by word and example
I can lead him to maturity and the wonder of everlasting life.
Let me always remember that he is your gift to me,
and let him grow to be a special blessing to the world.
Grant us both patience and wisdom as we seek the higher gifts
- faith, hope and love - with your help, so that together
we may spread the goodness of Christ to all.
