Gifts to the EndowmentThe De Smet Jesuit endowment fund is made up of donations which are permanently restricted and at the request of the donors are to be used for financial assistance to help students with tuition costs. The donors of these resources permit the High School to use all or part of the income earned, including capital appreciation, on related investments for unrestricted or temporarily restricted purposes. Unless specified at the time the gift is made, all gifts made in memoriam go into the school’s endowment fund. Gifts to the Odyssey AuctionThe Odyssey Auction is the school’s largest fundraiser. It is held each year on the third Saturday in November. You can support the auction by donating items to the auction to be sold (use of a timeshare or vacation home, tickets to the theater or sporting event, etc.), by serving as an auction sponsor, or by purchasing a ticket or a table for 10 people and attending the auction. To register for the auction, click here. | Gifts to the Tradition Golf TournamentThe Tradition Golf Tournament is held each year on the first Friday in June. You can support the Tradition by golfing or by being a sponsor. For more information on the Tradition, click here Student SponsorshipThe Sponsor a Student program provides financial assistance opportunities to qualified students who would otherwise not have the means to attend De Smet Jesuit. Through this program, the sponsor makes a four-year pledge to fund at least 50% of a student’s annual tuition ... and, in turn, changes his life forever. Sponsors may establish additional criteria, such as identifying a student from a particular parish or one who represents a specific culture. The school determines the eligibility of the students and will do its best to match a student that meets your established criteria. The donor will share in the student’s progress and achievements, and from time to time have the opportunity to meet the student at lunches and dinners sponsored by the school. A gift of real estate can be an attractive way to make a substantial commitment and to realize important tax and income benefits at the same time. You may be able to reduce significantly the amount of income, capital gain, and estate taxes you otherwise would have to pay. Finally, the disposal of your property can relieve you of management worries. Gifts of Life InsuranceLife insurance has long been a popular vehicle for making charitable contributions. In its simplest form, individuals can endow De Smet Jesuit with an amount of money at their deaths that they might not be able to contribute during their lifetimes. Insurance often is used in addition to regular annual gifts to enhance recurrent giving.
| Gifts of Retirement Plan AssetsContributions to retirement plans can provide an excellent opportunity for growth as they grow tax-free, meaning that the growth or earnings are not taxed annually but can continue to grow. The earnings are taxed when they are withdrawn, but this has allowed more dollars to be invested for more growth. Additional savings can occur if the recipient is in a lower tax bracket when the funds are withdrawn (for example, during retirement) than when the investments were growing.
