The Scrivener

The Scrivener is DeSmet Jesuit's literary magazine. Previously known as AMEX, the publication is about to enter its fifth year under its current nomenclature. The purpose of The Scrivener is to promote the artwork and manuscripts, short stories and poems, of the students, teachers, and staff at DeSmet Jesuit High School. Bi-annually, at Mission Week and the beginning of May, The Scrivener staff publishes these works. Students, faculty, and staff submit their works throughout the year and the student literary and art editors choose which submissions to publish and prepare the works for publication. Robert Hutchison is the moderator and receives great help from Mrs. Laurie Kohler and Mrs. Emily Ledbetter. Any students, faculty, or staff member looking to submit their work should e-mail Mr. Hutchison.

About the Magazine's Name

The magazine's current title, The Scrivener, comes from the Herman Mehlville short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener". Bartleby is hired by a lawyer to scribe or copy his case notes. Bartleby, though, "would prefer not to". The lawyer imprisons him and Bartleby dies in prison. Thus, the tale laments the way work kills the human spirit and the magazine's title is a tongue-in-cheek attempt at humor and the need for us to take a break from the regular rigors to appreciate the beauty in life.
