De Smet Foreign Language Department

Foreign Language Department Course Descriptions

The Foreign Language Department at De Smet Jesuit High School provides both diversity of language (French, Spanish and Latin) and unity of approach and emphasis. The faculty supports the current thinking on the importance of fluency in the spoken word, along with the other guidelines set by ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language). All teachers employ wide diversity of method; each of them is available for individual or small group work with students outside of class.

Our cohesiveness extends to our emphasis on the many aspects of the relevant culture. On any given day students might be learning about anything from buying a loaf of bread to studying the highest level of language used in art and literature. Not only do we have an active foreign language club, but we also offer exciting trips to Europe. Both are open to students of all three languages.

The current research, which demonstrates the importance of foreign language, is fully supported by the philosophy and policy of the De Smet administration. Beginning in freshman year every De Smet student has experience in foreign language. Many elect to take advantage of the 3rd and 4th year courses offered in each language. Those who do frequently receive 1818 college credit through Saint Louis University.
