Professional Development

De Smet Jesuit takes pride in retaining some of the finest faculty in the area. Our faculty is comprised of 80 religious and lay teachers, the majority of whom have master's degrees or higher. Faculty development and professional growth are key components to providing an unparalleled educational experience for our students.

De Smet Jesuit’s program for professional development and faculty formation is comprehensive and addresses the needs of faculty and staff as they try to meet the needs of our dynamic and diverse student population. We are on a mission, and our programs are rooted in the philosophy of St. Ignatius and grounded in both best practices and current pedagogical and educational research. We have an excellent working relationship with the Jesuit Schools Network (JSN) that has allowed us to think creatively, address needs, and become innovative in our approach to our programs to meet the needs of our Spartans. Our challenge continues to be to develop meaningful faculty formation programs that lead to improvement in the achievement of each Spartan in our school.

On a Pilgrimage with Ignatius: A Reflection for Teachers and Staff

Several times a year, the faculty and staff have opportunities to come together to reflect and pray through Ignatian Wake-Ups, Ignatian Evenings, Book Club and Days of Recollection.

One-on-One Spiritual Direction

Under the direction of our faculty chaplain, as well as other Jesuits at De Smet, faculty and staff take the opportunity to move through the 18th and 19th Annotation of the Spiritual Exercises. The goal of this program is to participate in the dynamic exchange of retreat director and retreatant, whereby coming to know Christ more intimately. This is done in both group and one-on-one settings. The hope is that the dynamic of this relationship is imitated in our classrooms.

Professional Organizations & Workshops

Funding is available for faculty and staff to join professional organizations and attend local or national workshops that help with their growth and development as educators.

Faculty Formation

De Smet Jesuit has developed an Ignatian Educator Induction Program, a two-year period in which new faculty members are taught the mission of the school and discuss best practices in the classroom. Faculty members receive extensive training to keep up with the latest technology and learn how to incorporate it into their curricula. The faculty are also evaluated through a feedback and evaluation program, and create professional growth plans.

AdvancedEd

Our school is accredited through AdvancedEd, an international organization that conducts reviews of schools to ensure that they maintain the highest standards.
